Summer is here, and like last year, I will be taking a month-long break from writing to soak up the sun with my boys. So this will be my last post until August.
To tide you over four long weeks without me, I thought I’d leave you with a smile. This week I present to you a super-serious update to a post from last year.
In the previous post, I wrote about how I learned a lot about my autistic son’s heart when he revealed that his career aspiration is to be a teacher’s aide and help kids just like himself someday. It was a touching moment for me. It felt like a real honor to be let into what he thinks and feels.
Well, my son has announced a new career aspiration that also tells me a lot about him and how he thinks. Here it is:
Him: “Mooommmy? I want. To be. When I grow up… I want to be a SERVICE DOG!”
Me: “Uhhh…what? You’re afraid of dogs.”
Him: “I want to… *giggle giggle* …be a… *giggle* …service dog. *giggle giggle*
Me: [not suspicious at all] “Ok, I want to hear this. Why do you want to be a service dog, Buddy?”
Him: *giggle* “I… *giggle giggle* …I will be a service dog, *giggle* and I will poop on the grass. *giggle* Then the man will have to pick up my poop… *giggle* and put it… IN A BAG!” *dissolves into uncontrolled laughter*
So there you have it. My son has decided to switch species and base his future job prospects on a poop joke. Who says autistics don’t get humor? This kid is already a comedian in his own mind, and I’m looking forward to hearing that delightful laugh of his more and more in the days to come.
Happy Summer, Everyone!

It is interesting that he picked a service dog, and not a regular dog, or any other animal. I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. Lol. But, if I could have finished my social work degree I would have liked to be an art therapist.
